Your Owasso Apartments Have Skype Interview Tips

It’s time for a refresher course in interview etiquette for residents of our Owasso apartments. Before you think to yourself, “I’ve been through plenty of interviews. I don’t need this,” let us clarify that this blog post will be about interview etiquette when it comes to Skype interviews. Even if you’ve been through dozens of traditional interviews, a Skype interview is a different beast altogether.

With the rise in popularity of Skype interviews, even seasoned interview veterans might be feeling like they need a refresher course on interview etiquette. After all, there are some things that you have to think about with a Skype interview that you never had to consider during previous conventional interviews.

Here some tips for impressing your potential employer if they ask to you to do a Skype interview, courtesy of our apartments for rent in Owasso.

  1. Choose a backdrop that looks professional, but not bland.

Your backdrop, like your outfit choice, is another chance to show the interviewer what you’re made of. Obviously, the outfit you choose to wear for your interview is highly dependent on the type of job you’re applying for. Your background is the same way. If it’s a creative role, you might want to add some trinkets or tasteful furniture in in the background so your interviewee isn’t just staring at you and a blank wall. Otherwise, they might have a boring memory of the interview.

If you’re applying for a buttoned-up business role, you’re going to want an extremely professional background. However, don’t just go with a white wall. The more natural the setting behind you, the more comfortable everyone in the interview will feel.

  1. Dress like you would for an in-person interview, from top to bottom.

Do not, we repeat, do not make the mistake of going with the “professional on top, pajamas on-bottom” look for your next Skype interview. You never know when you’ll need to stand up during the interview, and your chances of getting hired are basically zero if you get caught wearing shorts or sweatpants. Plus, you feel more professional when you’re dressed for success. If you’re only half-dressed, you’ll probably feel about half as successful.

  1. Look at the camera, not the screen

Here’s an important thing that many Skype interviewees mess up. If you look at the screen during the Skype interview, it will look like you’re staring at your interviewers chest. If you want it to appear as though you’re looking the person in the eyes, you’re going to want to look at the camera at the top of your monitor.

  1. Give yourself plenty of time to set up the tech

Skype interviews are great for people who are applying to jobs in different cities, remote jobs or jobs that don’t require an office. They’re convenient, but they aren’t always easy. If you don’t have a brand new computer, see if you can borrow a friend’s laptop. There’s nothing more frustrating than a choppy Skype interview, and you’ll come across as less prepared than a candidate who has a seamless interview, even if the tech troubles aren’t your fault.

The best way to ensure you have a seamless interview is to run tests, check connections and leave yourself plenty of time before the interview starts. The more time you have before you interview starts, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
