We’ve been doing this series for awhile now, and November has historically been one of the most exciting months in terms of notable events in our great state.

November 2nd, 2010 — First Female Governor of Oklahoma is Elected

 

On this day in 2010 Oklahomans decided that Mary Fallin would be their next governor. She became the first female governor in Oklahoma history, and the 39th female governor in America.

 

November 11th, 1926 — Route 66 is Established

 

Everyone who lives in Oklahoma should experience a road trip down Route 66 at one point in their lives. It’s an iconic road and an integral part of American history. There’s even a Route 66 museum that you can visit if you want get a deeper understanding of the road and its impact on the country. The road provided Americans with an expedited road from Chicago to Los Angeles that went through through Oklahoma. It was taken off the list of federal highways in 1985, but you can still dive it and experience a bit of Americana.

 

November 22nd, 1898 — Wiley Post is Born

 

You might not know who Wiley Post is, but people in the aviation industry do. Post was the first pilot to fly solo around the world, a feat which he was inspired to attempt after seeing a plane at the county fair in Lawton, Oklahoma. After he saw that plane — when he was just 15 — he enrolled himself in the Sweeney Automobile and Aviation School in Kansas City. Post completed his flight in 1931, leaving from New York, replacing the propeller in Fairbanks, Alaska and eventually returning to New York 8 days later.
