December 4th, 1928 — Oil is Found in Oklahoma City

Oil was discovered in Oklahoma City just in time to save a few citizens from the crushing poverty that affected many Americans during the Great Depression. When it first broke that Oklahoma City was sitting above a large oil reserve, oil derricks immediately popped up all over town. An oil well was even installed on the south lawn of the Oklahoma City State Capitol building!

December 5th, 2006 — Oklahoma Spaceport is Established

If you’re familiar with Burns Flat, Oklahoma, you’re probably familiar with the Spaceport. The area used to be known at the Clinton-Sherman Industrial Airpark, but it was taken over by the Oklahoma Space Authority in 2006. Now, it remains a public airport, however, it is also used to testing and research into space flight. There are 10 spaceports in the United States, but the Oklahoma Spaceport is the only one that’s free from military air space.

December 10th, 1988 — OSU Legend Barry Sanders wins the Heisman

Barry Sanders spent three years at Oklahoma State, playing in 8 games his first year and 11 games in each of the two years after that. He ran for over 3,500 yards, scored 48 rushing touchdowns, and averaged 7.6 yards per carry in his final year of college. Put simply, Barry Sanders was one of the greatest college running backs of all time. He went on to have a magical NFL career playing for the Detroit Lions, but he’ll always be a fan favorite in Oklahoma. Even Sooner fans have to respect what Sanders did. Barry Sanders remains the only Oklahoma State player to ever win the Heisman trophy.

December 30th, — 1970 Arkansas River Navigation System Completed

This riverway begins at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, and winds through Oklahoma and Arkansas on its way to the Mississippi River. The navigation system was a project by the Army Corps of Engineers to clear a path for ships and barges to move goods up and down the river. As a result of the project, the waterway is at least 9-feet deep throughout the length of the Arkansas river, starting at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa. There’s an elevation difference of 420 feet between the Tulsa Port of Catoosa and the Mississippi River, but the Arkansas River Navigation System allows commercial vessels to climb the elevation through a series of dams. It’s a pretty amazing feat of engineering, and it’s right here in our home state!
